Spent Nuclear Fuel Management Communications and Outreach
Purpose
The purpose of this working group is to help the Department of Energy (DOE) effectively and accurately communicate about planned Spent Nuclear Fuel transportation and associated Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) management activities, including federal interim storage.
The working group will provide input to the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy on developing messages, strategies, and products to communicate effectively with Tribes, States, the general public, and other stakeholders.
Activities
Examples of working group activities include, but are not limited to:
Identify and describe information and communication needs of the States and Tribes. (What do the Tribes and States need from DOE in order to successfully communicate about SNF transportation and management with the public, local public safety officials, State agencies, and local officials?).
Identify potential barriers to effective communication and strategies for improving communications.
Develop key messages on SNF transportation and related topics, such as radiation and SNF management.
Identify effective communications channels and approaches for conveying message to States, Tribes, and relevant audiences (Governors/Tribal Councils, agencies, local public safety officials, general public, etc.).
Review and comment on draft DOE-NE public information materials in development.
Deliverables

Recommendations on information and communication needs of the Tribes, States, and general public and strategies for improving communications about SNF transportation and SNF management.
Suggested key messages on SNF transportation and related topics, such as radiation and SNF management.
Recommendations on communications channels, approaches, and products to convey key messages to diverse audiences.
